Color of 2012 - Tangerine Tango

According to the Pantone Color Institute, Tangerine Tango is the color of 2012.  It is an electric orange red.

Hmmm....... would anyone like to choose this color as their wedding color theme?

My personal opinion - it's warm, daring and energizing.

A Few Cake Decorating Ideas for the Beginners

Home bakers should not be intimidated by the elaborate cakes being made today. You do not need to be a pastry chef to make beautiful cakes, you just need the know-how and practice. Of course the right tools will go a long way in your cake decorating endeavors. Here are a few ideas you might like to try.

Every cake worth merit starts with a smooth icing. The cake needs to cool completely before they are iced and decorated. To keep crumbs from ending up in your icing and ruining the look of your cake, start with a thin base coat of frosting that is not quite as stiff as the regular layer will be. Once this coat is on, set the cake in the refrigerator for 20 minutes. This will set the icing and any crumbs will be caught in this first layer. Now you can spread a regular layer of icing without worrying about crumbs.

Use an icing spatula to apply and smooth the second coat of icing. Once the icing is on the cake, start smoothing on the sides by running the spatula around the perimeter of the cake. One trick for smoothing the frosting is to dip the metal icing spatula in cold water, this will aid in smoothing the frosting. To smooth the top, dip the spatula in cold water and holding it horizontally over the top of the cake. Start at the point farthest from you, holding the spatula in both hands, skim the top of the icing by bringing the spatula straight toward you.

Simple Designs

Some cake decorators say learning to smooth the icing is the hardest part of cake decorating. Practice will make you a pro in not time. Once you have it down, show it off, even a cake without many decorations that is clean and smooth will make an perfectly elegant offering.

Instead of icing, cake tops can be dusted with powdered sugar. You can choose to use a stencil for a more decorated appearance, or just the powdered sugar for a clean look.

Edible decorations are a beautiful yet simple cake decorating technique. The use of sprinkles, candy, nuts, and coconut pressed into the icing before it sets, will make your cake stand out.

Sprinkles with mini M & M

To apply a textured look for your cake decorating, use a small cardboard comb, available in baking supply stores.

Using comb scraper, to get the effect on the freshcream
Piping is achieved by using a pastry bag fitted with a metal tip that is held on by a coupler. This is your most important tool for cake decorating. You can make lines, words, shells, flowers, and many other designs on the top or sides of the cake. Fill the bag with no more than 1 cup of icing at a time, twist the top of the bag and keep steady pressure when piping the design. Use your other hand to guide the tip. It is wise to find out everything you can about piping before you begin.

Fondant a smooth white paste, is used in complicated cake decorating. Fondant is kneaded and rolled to cover cakes with a sleek smooth layer of icing. It is also used to make designs that are 3-D. It is less tasty than buttercream, but the cake will look sleek and elegant.

How to Save Time When Preparing a Meal

Sometimes it’s great to spend an afternoon preparing a meal in a leisurely fashion. Other times you don’t have that luxury and getting everything done fast is the top priority. There are all sorts of tips and short-cuts that you can use when you’re in a hurry to deliver.

If you’re in a rush, choose your dish carefully. The best cook in the world can’t hurry up a slow roast, and dishes that include a range of different techniques and processes are always going to be more time-consuming. But, even if your dish isn’t entirely straightforward, there are still things you can do to save time – starting by putting the ingredients out, so you’re not chasing around, riffling through closets.

Even if you’re a purist about preparing food from scratch, sometimes you can compromise a little without sacrificing quality. Pre-prepared fresh and frozen foods can save you a lot of time scraping, peeling and dicing. It won’t be a solution for every dish, but it really won’t matter for others. Buying grated cheese, pre-chopped garlic in oil and other ready-made foods can make a significant difference to the time you spend wielding a knife in the kitchen.

Make use of labor-saving devices, as appropriate. They will also help you to multitask more effectively to speed things up. While something is being beaten in the mixer you can get on with something else. Good quality gadgets can also make life easier. A good device for slicing and dicing really can do the job effectively, and in half the time.

Microwaves and conventional ovens are both excellent for people looking to save time. Even if you’re not keen on things cooked in the microwave, part-cooking things like vegetables in the microwave first can cut down on standard hob-top cooking time. Also take a look at your cooking habits. If you’re making mashed potato, don’t cook them as halves. Dice them smaller and you’ve not only saved yourself some time but some gas and electricity to boot.

If you associate your ordinary oven with dishes that take hours, think of it from another angle. Vegetables and other dishes just need topping and tailing, drizzling with oil and away you go. You’re free to work on other elements of the meal. You may think frying is fast – and sometimes it’s the quickest method. But if you’ve got other things to do too then you’ll be wasting time checking and turning things and making sure the oil isn’t too hot.

There are two kinds of cooks – those who wash up as they go along and those who end up with a mountain of dirty dishes. If you get into the habit of doing the former, you can double up and save time that way too. A lot of kitchen efficiency is about re-examining your normal way of doing things. It may not be the best way. After all, you’ve got better things to do – like eating your home-cooked meal and chilling out with an accompanying coffee.

The Finishing Touch Of Cake Decorating

There are many ways to put a finishing touch on your cake decorating project. Sugar-frosted fruit and fresh flowers are very popular cake decoration garnishes. They will add a contrasting texture, and add color to your beautiful creation. Using these items will allow you to spruce up a plain cake.

Fruit
Using fresh berries for a garnish on your decorated cake are a colorful, and flavorful addition. You can roll them in sugar, glaze them, or use them plain. Placing fresh strawberries and mint leaves around the top of a chocolate cake will ad a splash of color. Orange sections, grapes, and strawberries glazed with shiny syrup, can be placed on the top of a cake for a beautiful, yet edible effect.

Dollops of whipped cream and fresh figs arranged tastefully on a cake can be quite appealing to the eye. Frosted whole fruit, such as grapes, seckel pears, small apples and figs are great cake decorations for late summer and fall weddings. Berries will last longer than sliced fruit, serve the cake soon after adding the fruit as it tends to bleed onto the frosting.

Flowers

The use of fresh, edible flowers in cake decorating, are a beautiful and easy way to make a cake more appealing. Starting with a cake dusted with confectioner's sugar, or a frosted cake, and add flowers. There are many flowers that are edible, rose petals, sweet violets, honeysuckle, bachelor's buttons, and callendulas  etc... You might want to add a generous dollop of whipped cream to the center, or just off center, of the cake. Arrange the flowers around the whipped cream.

When you dust the flowers with super-fine sugar, the look is one of elegance and sparkle. Candied rose petals and candied violets are a wonderful cake decoration. Make sure the flowers you are using are edible, clean, and free of pesticide.

Nuts

Candied or toasted nuts are great on carrot cakes and spice cakes. Coarse or finely chopped nuts can be pressed into the icing on the sides of the cake, or along the bottom edge, for texture and flavor.

The use of fresh fruits and flowers will add an unusual and unique look to any cake. Cake decoration has become a more bold hobby or choice of career. You can open your own cake decorating business and cater to your friends, family. And community. Although it is time consuming, cake decorating can also be a fun and lucrative business.

Artistic cake decorators can just about name their price for one of a kind cake decorating creations. Of course this will all depend on where you are located. Cake decorators in New York City will be able to charge more than those in Jamestown. Of course there is also a cost of living difference, and a more sophisticated group of clients. No matter where you are located, offering unusual, unique cake decoration will put you on top and you will be in popular demand for the cake decorating needs of the majority.

Recipes That Freeze Well - Make Your Weekly Meals Ahead of Time

Freezing food helps you save money but one of the main reasons to embrace it is so that you can save precious time. You can get home after a long day, whip something out of the freezer, stick it in the microwave or oven and soon relax over a hearty, healthy meal. It’s the convenient solution for modern living but you do need the right recipes for home-frozen dishes.

The best style of food for home freezing is the stew or casserole, but preferably without potatoes, rice and other starchy vegetables included, because they go mushy when defrosted. It won’t take long to cook some potatoes while you defrost your frozen food. Rice that is frozen separately from the main dish works very well.

Avoid dishes in creamy and cheesy sauces, because they tend to separate or curdle. A good old-fashioned meat casserole in flavorful gravy, whether it’s chicken, beef or lamb, is a top freezer standby. Tofu in a vegetarian dish also freezes well, although the texture becomes firmer – but some people prefer it this way. Curries and other spicy dishes can be frozen successfully, but freezing can significantly alter the balance of flavors.

Pies, quiches and other pastry dishes also freeze brilliantly. With quiches, the problem of freezing cheesy and creamy foods isn’t an issue, because the filling is set and won’t separate. All sorts of sweet pastries will also freeze well, so you can stock up on apple and cherry pies for desserts. Cakes and cake-based desserts (including cheesecakes) can also be frozen easily, but if you’re freezing cakes, do it without the icing.

One of the best dishes to freeze is tomato-based pasta sauce, which will be just as good when defrosted as when it was freshly cooked. A typical basic sauce consists of tomatoes, onion, garlic and herbs, especially basil. From here you can add your favorite ingredients. Include olives, anchovies and chillies for a bit of extra oomph. For a Bolognese sauce, use ground beef or soy mince. All you’ll need to do for a satisfying meal is cook the pasta.

Pizza is another great freezer favorite. If you want to make your own pizza dough, you can freeze it in portion-sized balls or disks and roll out later, or you can pre-bake the bases. It is also possible to freeze the bases with your margherita topping, and suitable other ingredients already on, but some topping elements freeze better than others. Adding things like peppers and pineapple fresh when you cook your pizza can be a better idea.

Cooking a big pot of casserole, pasta sauce or any other suitable favorite food may take a bit of time to start with, but you’ll reap the benefits when you have a perfect homemade meal in minutes down the line.

Find Out 10 Uses For Baking Soda In The Home

Whether you're trying to save money on the cleaning products you buy, or want to do your part for the environment by reducing the chemicals you use, baking soda is an excellent choice. Otherwise known as bicarbonate of soda, this is a completely natural ingredient that can be bought in large quantities for a low price.

Here are 10 uses for baking soda to get you started (you'll probably discover many more as time goes on):
  1. Get Rid Of Odors: One of the most popular uses for baking soda is for getting rid of odors. Keep a box of baking soda in the refrigerator or cupboard to absorb smells, or sprinkle a little in the bottom of a bin.
  2. Clearing Drains: To clear and prevent drain blockages, put a quarter of a cup of baking soda in the drain followed by hot water. You can also try baking soda and then vinegar for more stubborn blockages.
  3. General Cleaning: Baking soda can be used to clean a number of surfaces. Just sprinkle a little on a damp sponge and clean away!
  4. Cleaning Pans: If you're finding it difficult to clean burnt-on food off your pots and pans then soak them in baking soda for a little while before cleaning.
  5. Add To Your Laundry: Add half a cup of baking soda to your laundry, along with standard detergent, to give it an extra cleaning boost.
  6. Get Rid Of Limescale: Make a paste using baking soda and vinegar and apply this to surfaces like shower heads or sink plugs to get rid of limescale.
  7. Carpet Cleaning: To freshen up your carpets, sprinkle with baking soda and leave to sit overnight. Simply vacuum away the next day.
  8. Absorb Moisture In Cupboards: If you have a musty cupboard, leave a box or bowl of baking soda inside to absorb the moisture and keep things fresher.
  9. Help Melt Ice and Snow: If you want ice around your property to melt more quickly, sprinkle it with baking soda when you'd normally use salt. It helps lower the freezing point of water.
  10. Use As Deodorant: Uses for baking soda aren't just limited to cleaning – use it to keep yourself clean. Dust a little baking soda under the arms as a natural deodorant.
As you can see, there are many uses for baking soda, so it's well worth buying a box to have on hand for general cleaning purposes. Not only will it help your budget, but it's more healthy to use than traditional chemical cleaners.
